‘The Addams Family’ was created by Charles Addams as a series of single-panel cartoons in 1938. Its creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar told Newsweek that it only made sense to include Ricci in some form when Netflix decided to reboot the series.

Wednesday Addams was created by Ricci and had her cinematic debut in 1991's ‘The Addams Family’ and 1993's Addams Family Values.

In her new role as a teacher at Nevermore Academy, Ricci will often meet paths with her counterpart, Wednesday Addams' successor, Wednesday Ricci. After resorting to deceptive measures to shield her brother from his tormentors, the 15-year-old enrolls in the school for pupils with paranormal powers.


Ricci plays a woman named Marilyn Thornhill, but unlike the other students and faculty at Nevermore Academy, Ms. Thornhill has no superpowers. Gwendoline Christie's character, headmistress Larissa Weems, describes herself as a "normie" in one episode.

Gough and Millar are infamous for casting the series' most recognizable performer in the opposite role of the person they're replacing. In Smallville, Tom Welling played Clark Kent, and Christopher Reeve played Dr. Virgil Swann.

Thornhill is responsible for the botany class at Nevermore, but she also makes an effort to support Wednesday in her first year of school. Gough and Millar thought these efforts led to touching scenes showing Ricci's faith in Ortega in the role.
