Streaming giant Netflix had disclosed that over 100 million of its subscribers across the globe accessed the website through password sharing. However, as the streaming service begins to tackle saturation in its audience, it has now started rolling out a ban on password sharing worldwide. Just this week, Netflix had cautioned US customers that their account is for themselves only and their household. Here’s everything you may want to know about the latest change of rules of Netflix password sharing;

How will Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing be enforced?

The users who are part of ‘Netflix Household’, meaning the ones who are using the same internet connection, will be allowed to access the account in the basic plan. However, the users who have paid for adding extra users to their account through Standard or Premium plan will also be allowed to use the same account.

In order to enforce the rule, Netflix will send out notifications to the users who are using the streaming service through a borrowed password and would require them to make a new account. As per reports, Netflix would use IP addresses, device IDs, account activity to determine who is in ‘Netflix Household’. However, it remains unclear how people from the same household but at different locations will be impacted.

What options are left for the users?

Netflix’s Standard plan subscribers can pay extra to add one more member apart from their household while the Premium plan subscribers can add two. According to Netflix the additional member will have their own profile, account and even a separate password. The extra users would only be able to use the content streaming in their original country’s membership.
