The couple from Florida had been documenting their trip on social media. But when Laundrie, who was then 23, returned home alone on September 1, it set alarm bells ringing.

Finally, on September 11, when Petito’s family stopped receiving any communication from her, they reported her as missing.

Gabby Petito’s fiance refuses to co-operate

As per media reports, Laundrie refused to cooperate with authorities during a search for Petito. This raised suspicions, and netizens began probing their social media posts. Many people even gathered outside Laundrie’s family home, seeking answers.

The officers during the inquiry discovered that on August 12, a domestic violence incident involving the couple had been reported in Moab, Utah. Reportedly, a witness claimed to have seen Laundrie slap Petito.

When police pulled over, according to a Yahoo report, Petito was distressed. But she told the cops that she was the aggressor.

Because neither party filed charges, the incident was characterised as a mental health episode instead of domestic violence.

This bodycam video resurfaced following Petito's disappearance, increasing speculation that Laundrie mistreated her.

Laundrie’s confession

On September 19, Petito's remains were recovered in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming. The Yahoo report stated that a post-mortem revealed she was strangled and had blunt force trauma.

Two days before the discovery, on September 17, Laundrie’s parents had reported him missing. Amid the commotion of the search for him, police issued an arrest warrant for the unauthorised use of Petito's debit card.

Per the report, Laundrie’s body was discovered on October 20 in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in Florida. A notebook was discovered beside his body. The notebook contained a written confession in which he claimed that his fiance had fallen and wounded herself. He added that he strangled her out of “mercy”.
