Netflix slammed for plans to stream ‘Titanic’, accused of capitalizing on ‘Titan’ submersible tragedy

Netflix has been accused of being insensitive and trying to capitalize on the tragedy. A viewer told The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix has decided to stream the movie to earn cheap money as if the annual revenue of USD 31.6 billion is not enough.

Barely a few days after an attempt to reach the wreckage of the ship Titanic caused the death of five people thousands of feet deep under the sea, Netflix will stream the James Cameron movie ‘Titanic’ on July 1. The Oscar-winning 1997 film can be viewed only in the U.S. and Canada. It will also release a trailer for a documentary, ‘The Deepest Breath’.

A U.S.-registered company OceanGate Exploration sent a submersible with five people onboard to see the condition of the ‘Titanic’ that sank on April 15, 1912, on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City, killing about 1,500 people onboard. James Cameron's movie ‘Titanic’ is based on this mishap.

OceanGate Exploration submersible ‘Titan’ lost all communication and navigation contacts one hour and forty minutes after its dive into the North Atlantic Sea. The wreckage indicates that the submersible imploded. A probe into the reasons for the accident has begun.

Netflix's decision to release the trailer of the documentary ‘The Deepest Breath’ is also under the scanner because of its timing. Secondly, the documentary has nothing to do either with the Titan mishap or the Titanic tragedy, it is about Alessia Zecchini, who holds the deep diving record.

Earlier, Titanic director James Cameron criticized the OceanGate Exploration mission as too experimental and compared it to the Titanic tragedy. He also said after the submersible tragedy that when he learned that Titan had lost communication and navigation contacts, he thought that a disaster occurred. He also said that the design of the submersible was fundamentally flawed, and many experts had questioned it, but OceanGate Exploration CEO Stockton Rush refused to budge.
