Netflix announced a new feature that enables TV users to personalize the appearance of subtitles and closed captions on their streaming platform. Subscribers can now modify the size and style of the text, including toggling between small, medium, and large font sizes.
Additionally, Netflix has introduced three new text style options with contrasting backgrounds, which include Light (black text on a white background), Drop Shadow (white text on a black background), and Contrast (yellow text on a black background). These new options will help improve readability and user experience.
Previously available for web users, Netflix's subtitle customization feature is now available globally for TV users as well, which is a significant update. In 2018, Netflix reported that 70 per cent of its content is watched on TVs, and the popularity of smart TVs and app-supported streaming boxes has only increased since then. Other streaming platforms such as Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video also offer similar customizations for their subtitles.

The new feature has obvious accessibility benefits. By allowing Netflix TV users with visual or hearing impairments and auditory processing disorders to customize their viewing experience, they can adjust the subtitles and closed captions to their personal requirements. Additionally, making the text of subtitles and closed captions easier to read can enhance focus for those with cognitive disorders or those who are easily distracted.
