Netflix is reportedly considering the addition of "higher-end" titles to its gaming repertoire. The streaming giant, which ventured into gaming in November 2021 with mobile-focused titles, has since expanded its gaming library to over 70 titles and made key acquisitions in the gaming industry. According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, Netflix is now taking steps to broaden its gaming horizons, enabling the streaming of games on TVs or PCs.

Last November, Netflix's gaming became evident with the establishment of a Los Angeles studio tasked with creating a brand-new triple-A, third-person RPG for PC. The reason behind this expansion is to attract and retain subscribers by offering engaging gaming content in addition to its shows and films.

While the Wall Street Journal cites a significant rise in Netflix game downloads over the past year, with figures from app tracker Apptopia indicating an increase from 30.4 million to 70.5 million, a minority of Netflix's 238 million subscribers are playing games daily. The challenge lies in the process of requiring users to download mobile games, which results in a drop-off in engagement.

To address this issue, Netflix is piloting game streaming, currently available to a limited number of subscribers in Canada and the UK, featuring titles like Night School Studio's Oxenfree and "gem-mining arcade game" Molehew's Mining Adventure. This initiative is Netflix's Game Controller app, enabling users to play games on a TV or computer.

While some Netflix executives reportedly expressed concerns about the limitations of a virtual controller approach, Netflix decided to pursue this strategy. The specter of Google's discontinued Stadia looms large, as Netflix faces questions about entering a market where a giant like Google faced challenges with its game-streaming service.
