NCAA Lacrosse championship 2025: Cornell ends 48-year title drought with epic win over Maryland in NCAA Lacrosse final

After nearly half a century, the Cornell Big Red men’s lacrosse team has finally reclaimed the national spotlight. On May 26, 2025, they defeated the Maryland Terrapins 13-10 to capture their first NCAA national lacrosse championship since 1977.

The championship game of Maryland vs Cornell took place on Monday, May 26, in front of more than 30,000 spectators at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Cornell’s offense fired on all cylinders, scoring 13 goals against a tough Maryland defense. Goalie Justin McBride made several key saves, helping the Big Red maintain their lead throughout the contest.

Both teams exchanged goals early on, but the Cornell men's lacrosse team gradually pulled ahead with a balanced attack. Midfielder Matt Morgan led the charge with multiple goals, while attacker Pat Spencer contributed key assists and scores. Their teamwork and resilience proved decisive in the high-stakes game.


Cornell head coach Mike Pressler praised his team’s effort and focus. “They played with heart and discipline,” Pressler said. “This team earned every bit of this championship.”

Despite a strong season and a valiant effort in the final, the Maryland Terrapins could not overcome Cornell’s offensive power and solid defense.

This victory marks the end of Cornell's 48-year Lacrosse national championship drought, reestablishing the team as a dominant force in men’s college lacrosse.


Cornell concluded the 2025 season with a record of 17–1, their only loss occurring against Penn State in early March. They avenged that defeat in the semifinals on Saturday, overcoming the Nittany Lions with a score of 11–9 on their way to the championship.
