NBC cancels ‘Magnum P.I.’. See details

Fans may be saddened to know that NBC has cancelled Magnum P.I. There might be multiple reasons behind this, however, one media report has shed light on some of them.

In a surprising turn of events, NBC has decided to cancel the television series Magnum P.I. This procedural drama had faced a similar fate earlier when CBS dropped it due to licensing fees, but NBC stepped in to save the show in July 2022. Initially, it was announced that NBC had picked up the series for two seasons, each consisting of 10 episodes. However, prior to the premiere of the fifth season, plans changed.

Reports indicated that Magnum P.I. did not receive a guaranteed renewal for a sixth season. Instead, fans were informed that the fifth season would be divided into two parts. The first 10 episodes of the season aired until April 23, but there was no information about when the second part would be released. It was only when NBC unveiled its 2023-2024 schedule that it became apparent the show would be held until 2024.

This long hiatus disappointed fans, especially considering that production on the season had already concluded, making it suitable for the fall schedule. However, the entertainment industry was facing a writers strike and on the verge of an actors strike. By delaying the release of Part 2 until midseason, NBC could make adjustments if the strike persisted and they needed to fill gaps in their line-up.

But what led to the cancellation of the series?

It appears that Magnum P.I. may have fallen victim to the writers strike. According to Deadline, NBC didn't have to make a renewal decision at this early stage since the show was being held for the following year. However, the cast's options were set to expire on June 30, which coincided with the deadline for reaching an agreement between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP to avoid an actors strike.

The network faced three options: renew Magnum P.I. for a sixth season, extend the cast's options, or release the actors and cancel the series. Ultimately, they chose the latter. Speculation suggests that a renewal was unlikely due to networks being cautious about picking up new seasons amidst the writers strike and the uncertain timeline for production resuming. If an actors strike were to occur after June 30, the situation would become even more uncertain.

Will there be any hope for Magnum P.I.'s revival?

Unfortunately, it seems highly unlikely that another network or streaming platform will pick up the series. NBC already saved the show when it was initially canceled, and the chances of ABC or FOX taking it on are slim. Streaming platforms are also unlikely to pursue a sixth season due to complex streaming rights. In-season episodes of Magnum P.I. are available on Peacock, while previous seasons can be streamed on Paramount+. This would create a challenge for another streaming service that lacks access to seasons 1-5, making it a tough sell.
