Former Basketball player, Dwyane Wade, shared how a routine checkup led to a life-changing cancer diagnosis that forced him to face his own mortality and the removal of 40% of his kidney. He revealed the news on his podcast, The Why With Dwyane Wade, which was released on 30th January. The 43-year-old ex-basketball player gave some insight to what happened recently to him during the health scare. What seemed to be a minor stomach illness with a relatively weak urine flow issue, turned out to be the detection of a tumor in his right kidney. He confessed that since retiring from the NBA in 2019, he had not attended regular checkups. After his father had surgery, Wade decided to get himself a full-body exam.

In the episode, Wade reveals that he didn't expect anything serious. "Why is my p--- coming out slow? Why is my stream weak?" Wade recalled asking himself.

With his father's health history on his mind, he decided to get a full-body scan. That's when doctors made an unexpected discovery: a tumor on his kidney but was fortunate enough to have detected it in its earliest treatable stage.

He recalled that he was advised to undergo an immediate surgery to check if the tumour is cancerous since the biopsy failed. Wade had a life-saving surgery on December 18, 2023, which removed 40% of his kidney. He opened up about how the diagnosis and surgery hit him hard emotionally, affecting not just him but his whole family and called it his lowest point. Wade’s reveal of him battling Cancer comes as a shock to his fans and hopefully this will help in generating awareness regarding regular cancer screening at its earliest stage.

He had a legendary basketball career before his health scare. Wade had led the Miami Heat to win three NBA championships and won 13 All-Star selections during his career. Wade married ‘Bring it On’ fame, Gabrielle Union and currently hosts the American Adaptation of the British game show, The Cube and also is a co-owner of Utah Jazz, the Salt Lake based NBA team.
