How does the NBA Draft Lottery work?

The NBA Draft Lottery involves a randomized selection process using ping-pong balls. Fourteen balls numbered 1 through 14 are placed in a lottery machine, creating 1,001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn. Prior to the lottery, 1,000 of those combinations are assigned to the 14 participating teams. The balls are mixed in the lottery machine for 20 seconds, and the first ball is removed. The process is repeated for the second, third, and fourth balls, with a 10-second mix in between. The team assigned the combination matching the drawn balls receives the No. 1 pick. The same process is repeated for the second through fourth picks.
