National Pets Day: From pets to parents—here’s the list of all celebrations dedicated to each family member

Whether it is National Siblings Day or International Dog Day, the calendar is filled with offbeat, sentimental, and sometimes commercial "holidays." Some have a personal origin, while others were created for enjoyment—or profit. As National Pet Da...

Although celebrating your favourite person does not require one day, the calendar is packed with days dedicated to celebrating nearly every relationship or niche interest under the sun. April 11, for instance, marks National Pet Day.

National Pet Day gives a chance for people to show some extra affection to their four-legged or feathered or scaly companions. As per the National Day Calendar, the day was intended to honour pets that may not always get the attention or companionship they deserve.

Siblings Day was first celebrated by Claudia Evart

According to a Naples Daily report, just a day earlier on April 10, people celebrated National Siblings Day. This is a lesser-known occasion created in 1995 by Claudia Evart. She founded the day in memory of her two late siblings. She aimed to help others acknowledge their bonds with their siblings.

Reportedly, there are more than 1,500 such observances which are currently tracked by the National Day Calendar. This is an online institution which has become increasingly influential. Founded by Marlo Anderson, the calendar receives over 20,000 petitions annually—however, only a select few are approved by a four-member board.

Everyday individuals to major industry players submit proposals

According to the report, Anderson in a previous interview had revealed that people from different walks of life send holiday proposals via an online petition. From common public to major industry players—everyone sends these proposals, he had said.

The reason for them sending proposals vary, the report quoted Anderson saying. He added that some seek to recognise loved ones while others do so for commercial interests and hope to create a promotional buzz.

Anderson, according to the report, said that some holidays like Easter or Mother’s Day are long-standing and declared by tradition or official proclamation. However, others were created by individuals with an idea and a bit of money.

FAQs

Q1: Who decides what days become national celebrations?
Most official holidays have determinations made by government agencies or are designated days based on cultures. Many of the "national days" we hear about today are modern cultural days and determined by different organizations, (the National Day Calendar) who only choose from examples of the thousands of submissions they get from the public each year.

Q2: Are these days officially recognised holidays?
Some are, but many aren’t. Most of these observances are unofficial but widely celebrated thanks to social media and commercial campaigns.
