NASA’s James Webb space telescope spots six massive galaxies, challenges current understanding of universe

This discovery challenges the current theory that suggests that galaxies began as small clouds of stars and dust that grew over time.

Something unexpected was discovered by astronomers as they peered back in time to the early days of the universe using the James Webb Space Telescope.

According to a new study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, the discovery of six massive galaxies that existed between 500 million and 700 million years after the big bang by the James Webb Space Telescope has completely challenged the existing theories about the origins of galaxies.

Joel Leja, the co-author of the study and an assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, stated that "These objects are way more massive than anyone expected. We expected only to find tiny, young, baby galaxies at this point in time, but we’ve discovered galaxies as mature as our own in what was previously understood to be the dawn of the universe."

This was said in reference to the discovery of six massive galaxies by the James Webb Space Telescope, which existed between 500 million and 700 million years after the big bang.

Joel Leja stated that the discovery of massive galaxies challenges what was previously believed to be settled science regarding the formation of galaxies in the early universe. These galaxies are so massive that they conflict with 99% of models that represent early galaxies, which means that scientists need to rethink their understanding of how galaxies formed and evolved.

According to the current theory of galaxy formation, galaxies started off as small clusters of gas and dust that collapsed under gravity and gradually grew in size, forming stars along the way. Leja added that the discovery creates problems for science as it calls into question the entire picture of early galaxy formation, and has been informally named "universe breakers."

Once the high-resolution images from the James Webb Space Telescope were released in July, Joel Leja and his colleagues began analyzing the data. The team was taken aback when they saw that the galaxies were visible as large points of light. They were so surprised that they initially thought they made a mistake in interpreting the data.

However, after doing the modelling and attempting to figure out what the galaxies were, they were unable to find any mistakes despite trying multiple times. To determine why the galaxies grew so quickly, one way is to take a spectrum image of the galaxies. This would involve splitting light into different wavelengths to define various elements and determine the true distance of the galaxies. Leja stated that the spectroscopy data would provide a more detailed look at the galaxies and their impressive size.
