NASA Hubble Space Telescope reveals most detailed image of Andromeda galaxy to date

Astronomers have released the most comprehensive photograph of the Andromeda galaxy, which contains over 200 million stars. This astounding accomplishment sheds light on the galaxy's development and history.

Astronomers at NASA this week, reported that they had completed a decade-long, laborious effort to construct a comprehensive picture of our neighbouring galaxy, Andromeda. The final outcome is a panoramic view providing the most thorough depiction of the whole galaxy. Its scientific characteristics can potentially revolutionize and expand our knowledge of how spiral galaxies arise and grow across the cosmos.

In the year 2015, scientists at Hubble Space Telescope began the challenging task of stitching together images of Andromeda, but their efforts were confined to the galaxy's northern half. However, the final photograph had a panoramic view of 100 million stars crammed into more than 1.5 billion pixels.

During the 245th American Astronomical Society (AAS) news conference in Maryland, Zhuo Chen of the University of Washington informed reporters that she and her colleagues had recently completed a comparable endeavour for the galaxy's southern half, adding about 100 million stars to the previous mosaic.

"It's like photographing a beach and resolving individual grains of sand," said Chen.

The combined images reveal the radiant glow of nearly 200 million stars spread across the Andromeda galaxy. This marks the most expansive portrait ever pieced together using observations from the Hubble Space Telescope.

"This is the first time that we can see such detailed structures for an external galaxy," she added.

Despite its closeness to the Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy appears six times the diameter of the full moon in the sky (as viewed from Earth), providing enough "celestial real estate" for Hubble's pinpoint vision. According to a NASA release, the panoramic mosaic needed hundreds of pictures captured by the telescope over 1,000 orbits.

It was made possible by using the largest photo mosaic created by the Space Telescope. An image was acquired of Andromeda at a tilt angle of 77 degrees against the Earth, resulting in almost perpendicular photographs. While Hubble is a powerful telescope, the galaxy of Andromeda contains over a trillion stars. Many of them are too faint or small to be detected by this telescope. As a result, observing the immense enormity of this galaxy within the scope of Hubble's observation scale is nearly impossible.

This precise depiction will be an invaluable resource for scientists attempting to understand Andromeda's complicated and dynamic history, particularly its previous mergers with smaller satellite galaxies. Researchers will obtain vital insights by analyzing Hubble's observations of the galaxy's age, star mass, and heavy-element composition, which will assist in developing and testing various galaxy evolution theories. These models anticipate distinct patterns and properties throughout the two parts of Andromeda's disc, providing a better understanding of how galaxies like our own develop and evolve over time.

Apart from its scientific significance, this picture has the power to arouse wonder and interest in individuals from all walks of life, bringing the secrets of the cosmos closer to home. In addition to giving astronomers data, the fine features that Hubble has recorded serve as a powerful reminder of the size and splendour of the universe.

FAQs

Q1. What is the Andromeda galaxy?
A: The Andromeda galaxy is a spiral galaxy that lies about 2.5 million light-years from the Earth. Sometimes, it is referred to as M31. The nearest big galaxy to the Milky Way has over a trillion stars and is amongst the most studied in space.

Q2. What differentiates this image of Andromeda compared to the previous ones?
A: This is the most detailed picture with approximately 200 million stars and 1.5 billion pixels. It gives us a complete perspective which shows the intricate features of the galaxy in a way never seen before by combining data from Andromeda's northern and southern halves.
