The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has crossed the 200-day mark with no significant developments, and she remains missing despite intense search efforts by the Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.

Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of NBC journalist and Today show host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills of Tucson, Arizona. She was last seen on the evening of January 31, 2026, when she was dropped off at her residence. The following day, February 1, family members reported her missing after she failed to arrive at church.

Authorities believe Nancy was taken against her will, and the search for a suspect—along with answers regarding the incident—has now stretched on for more than six months.


When the search began following her disappearance last February, corners of social media quickly devolved into conspiracy theories. Rumors circulated claiming her captors, or even her alleged killers, were her daughter Annie and son-in-law Tommaso. Authorities, however, have strenuously denied those claims.

The Timeline of the Night Nancy Guthrie Vanished

According to CNN, Guthrie took an Uber to her daughter Annie’s home around 5:32 p.m. on January 31, 2026. Family members later drove her back, with her garage door opening at approximately 9:48 p.m. and closing at 9:50 p.m.

In the early morning hours of February 1, just hours after Guthrie returned home, critical digital tracking evidence began to go dark, the news outlet reported. Her doorbell camera was disconnected at 1:47 a.m., though motion detection software flagged activity at the residence shortly after at 2:12 a.m. By 2:28 a.m., data from her pacemaker app showed that the device had disconnected from her mobile phone.

Later that morning, concerned relatives checked on Guthrie around 11:56 a.m. when she uncharacteristically failed to show up for church. Finding her house empty, the family placed a 911 call at 12:03 p.m., prompting patrols from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to arrive on the scene by 12:15 p.m.

On February 7, just days after Nancy disappeared, law enforcement officials were reportedly seen at Annie Guthrie’s home. They left shortly after 10:30 p.m. carrying a bag. It is worth noting that authorities have not named Annie or Tommaso as suspects or accused them of any wrongdoing in connection with her abduction.

Ex-FBI agent quashes theories

Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer pushed back sharply against these online conspiracy theories, taking to X to voice her frustration over claims she says lack any factual basis. Highlighting the warm dynamic within the family, Coffindaffer emphasized that Nancy shared a close relationship with her daughter Annie and son-in-law, both of whom actively cared for her.

"She loved playing Mahjong and eating Saturday night dinners with them," the former agent wrote, adding, "Annie and Tommaso were her caregivers who made sure Nancy could stay in the house she loved and purchased 50 years ago to raise her family."



Coffindaffer argued that internet speculation has turned a tragic missing-person investigation into a tool for driving engagement through sensationalism. Pointing to specific rumors—such as assertions that Nancy owed money to a cartel or had refused someone a loan—she called out content creators directly.

"All of this was made up for clicks and views by YouTubers and streamers and proliferated by those who want clicks and views," she stated. Coffindaffer concluded her post firmly: "Nancy was kidnapped for ransom. That's the truth. No facade. No fake kidnapping."
