Is the Nancy Guthrie case still active?
According to Bob Gilliam, the case is far from cold. Speaking during a panel discussion on The Interview Room, he directly addressed speculation surrounding the investigation’s status, as quoted in a report by Parade.
“This is not a cold case, in my opinion,” Gilliam said during the live panel. “I’ve heard a lot of people speculate whether or not this case has gone cold. I think it’s anything but that.”
What role could forensic evidence play?
Gilliam emphasized that forensic analysis could be the turning point in the investigation. According to him, the outcome may ultimately depend on what that evidence reveals.
“I think that FBI and the Pima detectives, the investigators on the task force, are working suspects, potentially, and it’s come down to probably some form of forensic analysis that’s going to make or break the case.”

When could investigators make a breakthrough?
Although there is no confirmed timeline, Gilliam suggested that developments could come sooner rather than later. At the same time, he acknowledged that cases like this often take time.
“Sometimes these things just take a while. I thought, initially, we would have seen arrests by now, but I’m not surprised that we haven’t. And so, you know, we’re just going to—I hate to say this—but we’re just going to have to wait and see. And I think we will see. Probably sooner rather than later, within the next few months.”
He also cautioned that the process could extend much longer. “We just simply don’t know,” he said, noting that it could even take “a couple years” before the case is fully resolved, as per a report by Parade.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. Despite thousands of tips submitted to authorities, her whereabouts remain unknown. Investigators have not publicly identified any suspects or made arrests.
Even so, Gilliam expressed confidence that the case will eventually be solved. His comments reflect a belief shared by many investigators, that progress may not always be visible, but it is still happening. The investigation continues, with officials urging anyone who may have information to come forward.
