Following the announcement of the arrest warrant by the Pima County Sheriff's Office, users on X began drawing comparisons between Barnett and "Porch Guy," the unidentified suspect in the ongoing Nancy Guthrie kidnapping investigation.
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC journalist and Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing on February 1, 2026, and has not been located. Despite a six-month investigation led by the Pima County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Chris Nanos in coordination with the FBI—and despite gathering hundreds of leads along with DNA samples from outside her home—no arrests have been made. Officials confirmed that DNA analysis identified blood found on the home's front porch as belonging to Nancy Guthrie.
A doorbell camera at Guthrie's Tucson home recorded early-morning footage of a male suspect wearing a ski mask, backpack, gloves, and a holstered handgun as he tampered with the device. Approximately 30 minutes later, Guthrie's pacemaker app lost connectivity with her cellular phone line. Shortly before noon, relatives notified authorities of her disappearance after she failed to arrive for Sunday church services.
The suspect captured in the security footage is described as a male of average build, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall (175 cm). The FBI noted that he was carrying a black, 25-liter "Ozark Trail Hiker Pack" backpack.
Social Media speculation connecting Barnett to 'Porch Guy'
Reactions on X to the Pima County Sheriff's Office update highlighted several perceived similarities between Barnett and the suspect in the Guthrie case. One user commented, "Umm maybe it's just my eyes but that guy when he looked down walking kinda resembled the guy caught on Nancy Guthrie security camera and where did he drop the other 2 off at?" Another user posted, "PCSD Needs the public’s help locating these monsters. Stay vigilant, folks. Now I ain’t one to gossip, but these SHOES on the first guy seem eerily familiar and the second guy looks like a possibility in the Nancy Guthrie case too. NOT saying they’re connected but LOOK at him. His tats. His gait. His height & weight. Maybe they make a habit of using gray SUVs, too?"
The online speculation continued as a third user noted, "This guy got out of prison late 2025. Any connection to Nancy Guthrie? See the way he walks?" Meanwhile, another observer stated, "That guy when he gets out of the vehicle walks like the perp for Nancy Guthrie! He swings his head around low and watch his walk as he walks away. 857 is saying that he’s old, but I see muscular arms."
Additionally, an account dedicated to tracking updates in the Guthrie case posted a side-by-side photographic analysis comparing Barnett's facial features with those of "Porch Guy."
However, it is pertinent to note that, amid all the speculation, authorities have not issued any update linking the two cases, and investigations into both incidents are still ongoing separately.
Barnett is one of three suspects identified in the Ramirez homicide. The Pima County Sheriff's Office, which is also the lead agency investigating Guthrie's disappearance, released surveillance footage relative to the Ramirez case.
"An arrest warrant has been issued for 33-year-old Alex James Barnett in connection with the murder of Carlos Ramirez. Detectives also need help identifying 2 additional suspects," the agency stated, adding: "Surveillance footage showing a third, unidentified suspect exiting the vehicle believed to be involved in the incident in a parking lot near S. Palo Verde Road and E. 33rd Street at approximately 10:50am on August 19, 2026."
Understanding the Blue Alert System
The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued the alert on Thursday night, August 20, 2026, advising the public that Barnett should be considered armed and dangerous. The Blue Alert system was established in Arizona over a decade ago. Former Arizona State Representative Justin Pierce, who helped draft the legislation in 2014, emphasized that lawmakers designed the system with stringent activation criteria.
"When you get a blue alert, it really means something. You should pay attention to that," Pierce said, as quoted by NBC affiliate 12 News. The notification framework is intended to broadcast emergency warnings during incidents involving severe violence against law enforcement officers. Under Arizona law, activation requires that an officer be killed, critically injured, or assaulted with a deadly weapon, and that the suspect has fled the scene.
Additionally, investigators must establish that the suspect poses an imminent threat to the public. Authorities must possess a detailed description of the suspect's vehicle or license plate to broadcast, with reasonable expectation that publishing the information will prevent further harm or facilitate apprehension.
Pierce explained that these rigid parameters prevent public desensitization to emergency notifications. "When you get a blue alert, it really means something," he reiterated.
The present alert targets Barnett, who is wanted on first-degree murder charges in the death of Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez. Investigators report that Ramirez was fatally shot at a residence west of Tucson. His fiancée, a Pima County corrections officer, sustained gunshot injuries during the attack. Barnett remains at large.
"I can't think of a higher level of danger," Pierce added. "Anybody who is willing to do that sort of harm to a law enforcement officer is willing to do harm to anybody in their path." DPS has distributed physical descriptions of Barnett alongside details regarding his last known vehicle.
Suspect Profile: Alex James Barnett
Thirty three year-old Alex James Barnett is described as 6'2" tall, weighing 315 lbs, with a bald head, brown eyes, and multiple tattoos. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and a black motorcycle vest. Under the jurisdiction of the Pima County Sheriff's Office, authorities are searching for his vehicle, a maroon 2020 Harley-Davidson motorcycle (Model FLHXS) bearing Arizona license plate D4A656.
Pierce noted that incidents triggering a Blue Alert take a heavy toll on the law enforcement community and the families of officers. "These are folks that are leaving their home every day to go protect the community and protect us," Pierce was quoted by 12 News as saying. "And when their life is taken, it has a particularly difficult toll on those that perform that job."
He emphasized that the Blue Alert serves to warn the public while an immediate danger exists, and should be deactivated promptly once the suspect is in custody to prevent unnecessary alarm.
