Mystery of 1956 B-25 Bomber crash: Plane vanishes in river and remains missing after 70 years
In January 1956, a B-25 Mitchell bomber from the Air National Guard ran out of fuel over Pittsburgh and made an emergency landing in the Monongahela River. The crash happened a few miles from downtown Pittsburgh and the plane quickly sank into the river. The aircraft then disappeared and has never been found, creating a long-lasting mystery. Andy Masich from the Heinz History Center said the story became local folklore that “won’t die.”

The crash took place during the Cold War, which made people even more curious about it. Around the 70-year anniversary, the B-25 Recovery Group held a memorial event near the crash site, as stated by Blue Sky News report. The event included Taps, the national anthem, Amazing Grace, and a toast for military crews. Steve Byers, who leads the recovery group, said they want to find and recover the plane.

Search attempts to find plane

This is not the first search attempt, because at least five recovery efforts have happened. Right after the crash, a Coast Guard cutter named Forsythia caught the plane’s wing with its anchor. The line slipped, and the plane slid away and disappeared again. The Coast Guard and Army Corps searched for 14 days but could not find the bomber.

Later searches using sonar and remote cameras also found nothing. Some experts think the plane may be buried in river silt. Others believe polluted water may have dissolved the aluminum body, leaving only heavy parts. The plane had taken off from a Nevada air force base before running out of fuel. Pilot Maj.

Pilot emergency landing decision

William Dotson first asked to land at Greater Pittsburgh Airport. As fuel dropped further, he tried for the closer Allegheny County Airport. When the plane started malfunctioning, Dotson decided to land on the river near today’s Homestead Grays Bridge, as stated by Blue Sky News report. Six people were on board the aircraft. The daytime crash shocked drivers on nearby Carson Street. Many motorists stopped to watch or offer help. Four crew members swam to shore in 34-degree cold water.

All six survived the crash impact itself. After floating for about 11 minutes, the men entered the icy water. Capt. Jean Ingraham and Staff Sgt. Walter Soocey drowned while trying to swim to shore, as noted by Blue Sky News report. Their bodies were found months later. For decades, pilot Dotson and others avoided talking about the incident.

Conspiracy theories about bomber

Masich said it was unclear if Dotson stayed silent because of orders or painful memories. The silence helped create many conspiracy theories. Some people believed the bomber carried secret or dangerous cargo. Others claimed the military secretly recovered the plane to hide the truth. One theory suggested the plane carried a nuclear weapon.

Another rumor said it transported a UFO. Some even claimed Soviet agents were on board. Another wild idea said the plane carried showgirls from Washington, D.C. Steve Byers said he does not believe these theories, as cited by Blue Sky News report. Byers believes the plane is still in the river and should be recovered. Even after 70 years, the missing bomber remains one of Pittsburgh’s biggest mysteries.
