Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is making the U.S. military slightly nervous with an unexpected order. The order says that every general and admiral, as well as their senior enlisted advisers, must go to Washington, D.C. for a face-to-face meeting, no matter where they are stationed.

The Pentagon is reportedly worried about the move, and officials are questioning the timing and scope of such a big call. Reports say that this meeting will include military officers from areas of conflict near Ukraine, the Middle East, and naval operations off the coast of China.

Hundreds of U.S. military generals and admirals are ordered to convene at a Marine Corps base in Virginia next week on short notice and without providing a reason.

Why is the order making people worry?

The Washington Post report claims that the order is "sowing confusion and alarm" because it is so broad. The Trump administration has already fired a number of high-ranking military officers in its first 100 days, which makes this sudden meeting even more worrisome, as per a report by NewsBreak.

Senior commanders at the one-star rank and above, along with their top advisers, gathered Tuesday at the Marine Corps base in Quantico without a reason specified in the directive.

s. According to one person who saw a copy of the order, "all general officers in command in grade O-7 through O-10 and their general officer senior enlisted advisers are directed to attend within operational constraints." The military classifies all generals and admirals as O-7 through O-10, reported The Washington Post.

Who has to be there?

The order reportedly "applies to all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above, or their Navy equivalent, serving in command positions and their top enlisted advisers."

For his in-person event, Hegseth also anticipates that people in conflict areas will return. This includes top military leaders in charge of troops near Ukraine, in the Middle East, and in waters off the coast of China, according to the Washington Post.

Sean Parnell, a spokesman for the Pentagon, said that Hegseth “will be addressing his senior military leaders.”

What makes the timing important?

The order comes just before a possible government shutdown if Congress doesn't pass a budget. Almost 800 senior officers are being called back, and both inside and outside the Pentagon, people are closely watching the size and urgency of Hegseth's request, as per a report by NewsBreak.

"Typically, these officers each oversee hundreds or thousands of rank-and-file troops," the report added.
