Mysterious gas leaks in Russian pipelines put Denmark and Sweden on alert

In response to sudden, inexplicable leaks in two Russian gas pipelines beneath the Baltic Sea—infrastructure at the centre of an energy crisis since Russia invaded Ukraine—Europe was scrambling on Tuesday to look into potential sabotage.

Prime Ministers of Denmark and Sweden, acknowledged that 'sabotage' could not be ruled out in suspicious leaks on Russian Nord Stream gas pipelines. But a motivation and who might be responsible for any wrongdoing, if established, was far from obvious.

The day after a leak on the neighboring Nord Stream 2 pipeline was detected, which led Denmark to impose shipping restrictions and a tiny no-fly zone, Sweden's Maritime Authority issued an advisory about two leaks in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

Both pipelines have been focal points in an ongoing energy conflict between Moscow and European cities that has ravaged the economies of the West, driven up gas prices, and triggered a search for other energy sources.

Sabotage could not be ruled out, according to Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister of Denmark. Here, the talks are about three leaks that are separated from one another, so it is difficult to think that it is a coincidence, she said.
