Micron stock price today: MU shares fall below its 200-day moving average
Why is Micron stock crashing today? Micron Technology shares are falling sharply as a wider selloff hits US technology stocks. But the pressure on the memory chipmaker goes beyond the broader market decline. A reported halt in construction of its $4.5 billion Taiwan semiconductor plant has added another concern for investors already questioning the pace of AI infrastructure spending.

Micron stock (NASDAQ: MU) was quoted at $708.64 on Thursday, November 5. It has also broken below its 200-day moving average for the first time since May 2025. The Nasdaq is down nearly 4%, while Nvidia, Tesla and other technology stocks are also facing heavy selling.

US stock market today: Nasdaq falls 3.88% as chip stocks sink

The US stock market extended its decline on Thursday, with technology shares leading the losses. At 11:30:52 a.m. ET, the Nasdaq Composite was down 997.87 points, or 3.88%, at 24,738.65. The S&P 500 had fallen 212.31 points, or 2.76%, to 7,476.31.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1,110.29 points, or 2.08%, at 52,245.83. The sharper decline in the Nasdaq shows the pressure on growth and technology stocks.

Nvidia shares fell 6.88% to $186.36, while Tesla dropped 9.19% to $349.79. Apple was down 0.68% at $347.12. The selling was not limited to the biggest technology companies. Intel fell 6.92% to $54.23, IREN dropped 16.74% to $18.07, and CoreWeave declined 12.43% to $42.40.

Snap lost 14.24% to $5.08, while Nokia fell 9.14% to $7.50. These declines point to broader pressure across technology and growth shares rather than an isolated fall in Micron.

Micron stock price today: MU breaks below its 200-day moving average

Micron shares have suffered a major reversal after reaching a record closing price of $1,213.56 on June 25. The stock is now around 42% below that peak, based on the supplied $708.64 quote.

The decline has also pushed MU below its 200-day moving average, which was around $750 to $756. The last time Micron closed below this technical level was May 30, 2025.

The 200-day moving average tracks a stock's average closing price over roughly 200 trading sessions. Investors use it to assess the longer-term price trend. A move below this level can trigger additional selling from traders who follow technical indicators.

Micron had already fallen nearly 7% in the previous trading session. Its losses have accelerated during a week in which semiconductor shares have come under pressure.

Why is MU stock down today? Micron's $4.5 billion Taiwan plant faces construction halt

The immediate company-specific concern comes from Taiwan. Bloomberg reported that Micron has stopped construction work on its planned Fab 11E semiconductor facility in Taoyuan.

The project has an estimated investment of $3 billion to $4.5 billion. It was designed to manufacture high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DRAM using advanced equipment, with production scheduled to begin in 2028.

The construction halt follows a labour dispute with the Taoyuan union. Workers are demanding a formal profit-sharing mechanism linked to Micron's earnings growth from the AI boom.

Micron reached a separate agreement with the larger Taichung union in late October. However, the Taoyuan union has not accepted the arrangement. The two sides are expected to meet again on November 6.

The dispute has become an additional risk for Micron at a time when investors are closely watching its ability to expand memory production for the AI industry.

Taiwan is central to Micron's memory business. The island accounts for approximately 60% of the company's global DRAM production and has around 15,000 Micron employees.

A prolonged dispute could complicate the company's plans to increase manufacturing capacity. This matters because demand for high-bandwidth memory has increased with the expansion of AI data centres and advanced computing systems.

However, the reported construction suspension should not be confused with a shutdown of Micron's existing factories. The company said its current Taiwan operations continue to run normally and that it remains confident about maintaining business continuity for customers.

Micron has not directly addressed the reported Fab 11E construction suspension.

Nvidia, Intel and semiconductor ETF SMH face further losses

The selling has spread across the semiconductor industry. Nvidia was down nearly 7% in the supplied watchlist data, while Intel had lost 6.92%. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ: SMH) was also trading below its 200-day moving average and had declined 14.8% for the week, according to the reported figures.

The pressure comes as investors reassess the outlook for AI infrastructure spending. Concerns about future data-centre construction and the political environment following Democratic gains in the US midterm elections have added uncertainty to the sector.

For companies such as Micron, Nvidia and CoreWeave, investor expectations are closely tied to continued spending on AI infrastructure. Any sign of slower expansion can quickly affect stock prices, even when current business operations remain strong.

The November 6 meeting between Micron and the Taoyuan union is the next important development to watch. A settlement could reduce uncertainty around the Fab 11E project, while a prolonged dispute could complicate its planned 2028 production schedule.
