MTV Video Music Awards 2026: Kacey Musgraves paid tribute to the late Dolly Parton with the country singer’s classic 'I Will Always Love You'; video goes viral

Singer Kacey Musgraves remembered country music icon Dolly Parton and paid homage to the late singer and songwriter at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (September 27, 2026), held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Parton died of cancer at the age of 80 in August 2026, and there was always going to be a moment for her. As a tribute to her, Musgraves sang a cover of Parton's “I Will Always Love You." The two-hour MTV Video Music Awards show was broadcast live on CBS. The show was also simulcast on MTV and available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.

Musgraves made a return to the VMA stage in a curve-hugging pink sequined gown, giving sparkles of Parton as she sang Dolly's classic. Musgraves, who herself is a popular country singer, has been long known for seeing Parton as her biggest influence. She has often been seen praising her for her songwriting, and she even performed alongside her during the 2019 Grammys tribute.

Kacey had also honored Dolly Parton days after her death when she performed "Here You Come Again" and also dedicated her own song, "Rainbow," to the late country singer during a Boston concert. The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards were opened by Madonna. “It's Mother" were the first words uttered by Madonna as she opened the starry award show with her 2026 single “Bring Your Love" alongside her collaborator Sabrina Carpenter.

The show saw a delay of 20 minutes due to a tight NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys. Snoop Dogg, a 13-time VMA nominee and three-time winner, emerged as host shortly thereafter.

Speaking about the nominations at the 2026 MTV VMA, Madonna led the way with 11 nominations, including video, artist, and song of the year, as well as best collaboration, dance, direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography, and visual effects. The pop superstar has been nominated in every decade of her musical career. She has 19 competitive MTV VMA wins and in 1986 became the first solo female artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award. Taylor Swift follows with the second-highest nominations, with nine.
