His life was seriously threatened by the cellulitis that resulted from the lesions being infected.

Tristan’s journey

Tristan, a 31-year-old from London, experienced less obvious initial symptoms. While attending the Eurovision final in Turin, he felt unusually tired and had lower back pain, attributing it to the holiday activities. After returning to London, he noticed a few spots on his intimate areas, which he initially thought were related to an STI.

Despite using protection, Tristan’s symptoms worsened, prompting him to visit a hospital. There, he was diagnosed with mpox and observed the medical staff don hazmat suits, a response influenced by recent Covid-19 protocols. He was placed in isolation but did not receive specific antiviral treatment, as his case was not severe enough. He only experienced mild lesions, and by the time he was isolated, his condition had improved.

Tom’s struggle

Tom, a 25-year-old from Atlanta, faced symptoms mainly affecting his face and mouth. He believed he contracted mpox from a three-way kiss at a gay bathhouse. His initial symptom was a bump above his lip, which later developed into painful lesions on his tongue. The pain was intense, causing him to cry frequently. Eating and drinking were difficult, leading him to rely on smoothies and apple sauce.
