In the past thousands of years, Mount Rainier, a towering peak situated in Washington state at an elevation of 4.3 kilometers (2.7 miles) above sea level, has not experienced a significant volcanic eruption. US Geological Survey experts note Mount Rainier's biggest risk lies in lahars—fast-moving mixes of water and volcanic debris. These can swiftly flood valleys after melting ice or snow during an eruption.
