Motivational Quote of the Day by Jamie Lee Curtis: A Powerful Lesson in Self-Acceptance and Being Yourself
Quote of the day by Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis: Jamie Lee Curtis once gave herself a piece of advice that sounds simple but becomes harder to follow with age; get comfortable with yourself and find the things you actually like doing.

The quote is;

‘The goal is to get comfortable with yourself and find the things you like to do.’

The comment came when Curtis was asked what she would tell her 28-year-old self. Her answer was not about career success or avoiding mistakes. It was about knowing the difference between your own preferences and the things you do because someone else expects them from you.

What does Jamie Lee Curtis’ quote about self-acceptance mean?

At its core, the quote asks people to separate their own preferences from outside approval. That can be harder than it sounds. People often make decisions while considering what parents, partners, colleagues or friends might think. Over time, those choices can make it difficult to recognise what actually feels right.

Why being comfortable with yourself can take time

Knowing yourself isn't always straightforward. People change as they move through work, relationships, family responsibilities and different stages of adulthood.

Someone can look settled from the outside and still be unsure about a major decision. A colleague may appear confident while privately questioning a career choice. A friend who seems happy with a busy social life may actually prefer a quieter routine.

That gap between appearance and private experience matters. We often compare what we know about ourselves with what we can see of other people. The comparison is rarely fair because we don't have access to the full picture.

There is an important limit to the idea of accepting yourself. It shouldn't become an excuse to stop growing.

A person can accept that they struggle with something and still work on it. They can admit that a career isn't right and still take time to plan a change. They can recognise a mistake without deciding that the mistake defines them.

Acceptance means seeing the situation clearly. It doesn't mean accepting harmful behaviour or giving up on change.

The quote also has a useful consequence for relationships. If people are still figuring themselves out, it becomes harder to assume that we know what someone else should want.

About Jamie Lee Curtis

Curtis was born on November 22, 1958, in Los Angeles to actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. She attended schools in California and Connecticut before briefly studying at the University of the Pacific.

Her film breakthrough came in 1978, when she played Laurie Strode in John Carpenter's Halloween. The role made her one of the most recognisable young actors in horror and led to further appearances in films including The Fog, Prom Night and Halloween II.

She did not remain confined to that genre. Trading Places and A Fish Called Wanda established her as a comedy performer, while True Lies became one of her biggest mainstream film roles.

Curtis later appeared in Freaky Friday, Knives Out and the later Halloween films. Her career reached a major awards milestone with Everything Everywhere All at Once. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Deirdre Beaubeirdra at the 2023 Oscars.

Acting has also not been her only public work. Curtis has written children's books since the 1990s, including Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day. She has also remained involved in public advocacy and charitable work.

Life lessons from the quote

The useful part of the quote is its ordinary nature. It doesn't promise that knowing yourself will remove difficult choices. It suggests something smaller and more realistic: pay attention to what you genuinely enjoy before allowing other people's expectations to make the decision for you.

Curtis’s statement offer actionable guidance for everyday decision-making:

  • Do not assume that external approval will automatically bring internal contentment.
  • Remember that personal preferences are valid even if they do not align with popular trends.
  • Understand that comparing your internal doubts to someone else’s public image is misleading.
  • Accept that getting comfortable with yourself is a continuous process, not a fixed destination.
  • Give yourself permission to explore interests without demanding immediate perfection or commercial success.
  • Use personal clarity to set healthier boundaries in work, family, and social relationships.
  • Learn to extend patience and grace to others as they navigate their own self-discovery.
Getting comfortable with yourself is not a final achievement. Preferences change, circumstances change and people change with them. The task is to keep noticing what belongs to you and what you have taken on because somebody else thought you should.
