Maryam Touzani, a Moroccan director and screenwriter, has been selected to join the jury of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. She will be joined by eight other industry professionals on the jury panel.

During the 76th Cannes Film Festival, the jury, including Maryam Touzani, will decide the recipient of the prestigious Palme d'Or award among the 21 films that have been announced as competition entries. It takes place in Cannes, France on May 16 and runs through May 27.

Journalist turned filmmaker

Maryam Touzani has a background in journalism and initially ventured into the world of cinema through her writings on movies. Transitioning to scriptwriting and directing, she embarked on a path that included creating impactful short films and documentaries. Notable among her documentary works is "Sous Ma Peau Vieille."

Directorial Debut

In 2019, Touzani made her directorial debut with the feature film "Adam", which received recognition at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section that celebrates films with distinctive styles and unconventional narratives. Moreover, the film was chosen as Morocco's official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Following her directorial debut with "Adam," she collaborated with her husband, filmmaker Nabil Ayouch, in the film "Razzia," where she co-wrote the screenplay and played a role. Additionally, she co-wrote "Casablanca Beats."

Touzani's most notable work is "The Blue Caftan," released last year to high acclaim. It was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and made the long list for the International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards. Furthermore, it received nominations for Best Film and Best Director at the seventh Critics Awards for Arab Films.
