Monkeypox to be renamed by World Health Organization after scientists say the word is biased toward Africa

The World Health Organization has decided to rename the rapidly spreading monkeypox virus. The replacement of the monkeypox virus name has been decided as a result of a letter written last week by a group of 30 worldwide scientists stating the "ur...

The Monkeypox virus is causing havoc all over the world. However, an example of the Monkeypox virus being rebranded has just come to light. So, after scientists urged a new non-discriminatory and non-stigmatizing" term for the virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that monkeypox would be renamed.

The present nomenclature approach for monkeypox distinguishes between two kinds: West African and Central African/Congo Basin, with the present outbreak being more closely linked to the West African virus.

Providing geographical labels for serious infectious diseases has been against WHO best practice guidelines because that might have severe repercussions for countries where novel diseases are discovered or discriminate against certain groups.

A new term designation for the Monkeypox virus
Instead, the 30 worldwide experts proposed changing the name of monkeypox to MPXV and assigning a number to each group, or variant, in order of identification.

Central African monkeypox would be termed MPXV1, West African variation as MPXV2, and for prior worldwide outbreaks of a West African variant branch, it would be MPXV3. For the monkeypox outbreak, the experts also advocated developing a new clade.

They suggest that, unlike MPXV, which is passed from animals to humans, the new variant has become a separate 'human virus' due to its persistent propagation from person to person.

This new type should be given the name hMPXV, with an alphabet symbol and numeral added to distinguish heritable traits.

This technique is similar to that applied to COVID variations such as Omicron BA.2, the current prevalent strain in the United Kingdom.

With earlier human-to-human monkeypox occurrences in the United States, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Singapore, and Israel between 2017 and 2019, the virus/disease driving the existing international monkeypox spread would be known as hMPXVB.1.

Why is renaming this virus advantageous?
One of the advantages of dropping geographic keywords is that it will encourage governments to continue watching for emerging diseases and sounding the alarm when they are detected instead of having their people linked with them negatively.

While the WHO has already declared that it supports the effort to rename monkeypox, the International Committee of Taxonomy of Viruses is in charge of virus naming.
