Molly Russell, a 14-year-old girl from London, took her life in November 2017. The girl was exposed to graphical content depicting self-harm and suicide on social media platforms, which pushed her into severe depression. And to get out of it, Molly Russell reached out to YouTubers, rappers, and JK Rowling.
Molly’s father, Ian Russell, told a court in North London on Thursday that social media helped kill her daughter due to the objectionable content on the platforms.
In an inquest, Ian informed that her daughter contacted popular YouTuber Salice Rose, rapper Phora, and the famed fantasy author on Twitter. Accessing her account after her suicide, Ian found that Molly had sent multiple tweets to her “idols,” but none of them replied.

Opening monologues are central to any award show. It is in the monologue that the host often pokes fun at the guests and when it comes to the English stand-up comic Ricky Gervais, you can expect the jokes to be brutally honest, borderline offensive that will have you laughing till your stomach hurts.
The host started with poking fun at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). He then went on to take jibes at controversial figures Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein. He also offered a nuanced take on racism in Hollywood.
Gervais then took a dig at the tech giant Apple for ‘running sweatshops in China’, while talking about their new show. The TV personality ended his monologue by asking the stars not to give political speeches as they have spent ‘less time in school than Greta Thunberg’.
No points for guessing Gervais owned the night.

In her message to Rose in August 2017, Molly said she needed her help and wanted to change without being judged. Subsequently, she sent a tweet to Rose and Phora, asking them whether it was bad for not wanting to be herself or being in the world. Later in October, Molly tweeted to Rowling that her mind was full of suicidal thoughts and reading Harry Potter was her only escape.

Ian told the court that Molly was calling out into an “empty void” as the celebrities with millions of followers wouldn’t have noticed the sad little girl’s tweet. The Russell family’s attorney in the court, Oliver Sanders, pointed out that Molly found it better to reach out to someone on social media than in her real life. Ian also mentioned that his daughter’s web search history was the “bleakest of worlds” and that much social media content normalized self-harm and suicide. He also said that the content on social media discouraged people from seeking mental help.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, was granted permission to be an interested party in the inquest, and so was Pinterest. Both the companies are now legally entitled to participate in the proceedings, which is a first for Meta and Pinterest in the UK.
