Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has backed Mohamed Salah as a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or. But he added that winning a major trophy this season will be essential to strengthen his case.

Salah has been in superb form, netting 30 goals and providing 21 assists across all competitions. Most notably, he delivered a goal and an assist in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

Consistency is key for Salah

Yet, Slot says that such performances alone may not be enough, as media reports have highlighted.

When asked about Salah’s prospects of winning the Ballon d’Or, Slot told The Sporting News that additional silverware is necessary. He stressed that Salah must continue performing at his current level, as he has for the past seven to eight months, to stay in contention for the award.

Salah’s role in win against Manchester City

According to The Sporting News, the Liverpool boss also praised Salah’s overall contribution, particularly his defensive efforts in the win against Manchester City. Slot acknowledged that while Salah’s goal and assist were impressive, his defensive work in the second half was outstanding. However, he reiterated that Liverpool must secure a major trophy for Salah to have a realistic shot at the Ballon d’Or.

Slot also noted that while the most recent Ballon d’Or winner, Rodri, was a midfielder, the award has historically gone to attacking players who have led their teams to major honours. He added that while individual statistics are important, most Ballon d’Or winners have lifted either a league title or the Champions League.

Salah’s career and Ballon d’Or race

Since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has established himself as one of the world’s top footballers. The Egyptian forward has won multiple Premier League Golden Boots and played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League triumph and 2020 Premier League title.

Despite his remarkable achievements, the Ballon d’Or has eluded him, with the award largely dominated by the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in recent years. However, given his current form, Salah is once again in contention. As history suggests, Champions League success could significantly enhance his chances of winning football’s ultimate individual honour.

Slot believes that individual accolades are closely tied to team achievements. If Liverpool secures a major trophy, particularly the Champions League, Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or will increase greatly.
