Mississippi shooting: At least six people were killed Friday night after a gunman opened fire at multiple locations in West Point, Mississippi, according to local authorities, as per multiple reports.

Mississippi Shooting Leaves Six Dead: Three Locations Involved in West Point Gunfire

Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said the shooting unfolded across three different locations in the town of West Point, which is near the Alabama border, as per a CBS News report. Law enforcement officers later took a suspect into custody, and officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Mississippi Authorities Confirm Suspect in Custody

Sheriff Scott wrote in a social media Facebook post, “Unfortunately tonight we have dealt with tragedy in our community. Multiple innocent lives lost due to violence,” as quoted by The Sun.


He also revealed that the individual responsible was in custody and urged residents to keep the victims and their families in their prayers.

Scott said that, “We do have the individual in custody and no longer poses a threat to our community," adding, “I ask that you lift our victims and their families in your prayers," as quoted by The Sun.

While details remain limited, Sheriff Scott confirmed to NBC News and local outlet WTVA that six people were killed in the series of related shootings. In the Facebook post, he also wrote that, “Law Enforcement is busy investigating and will release an update as soon as possible.”

Investigation Continues After West Point Mississippi Shooting

However, no motive has been identified at this time.

Authorities said investigators are continuing to work the case and more information will be released as it becomes available. The sheriff’s office did not provide additional details but said a news conference is planned later in the day, as per a CBS News report.
