In yet another climate change effect, the water levels of river Mississippi, the US's second longest river, have fallen to record lows, lower than the usual deficient levels in October and November. Climatologist Andrew Joyner believes the severe dry weather prevailing in many areas of the US in the past few weeks to be the primary cause of the falling water level.

A Significant Economic Corridor

The river, which passes to ten states with another eight(states) sharing a boundary, Mississippi acts as a crucial waterway transporting thousands of tonnes of commodities like fertilizer, coal, building material, and many more. Besides domestic industries, the waterway also serves international trade. Against the backdrop of the Ukraine war, global demand for commodities from the US has increased substantially. However, the low water level in the river is turning out to be a hindrance.

A Bit of History

Low water levels in the river in Louisiana have revealed parts of a wooden boat that sank almost a century ago in Baton Rouge. Likewise, the shell of the riverboat casino that sank near Memphis last year was also found.
