A baby boy named Thaddeus Daniel Pierce was born to a couple in Ohio from an embryo that was frozen for over 30 years, possibly setting a new world record. Lindsey Pierce, 35, and Tim Pierce, 34, had tried to have a baby for seven years before they adopted the embryo, which was originally created in 1994.

The baby was born from an embryo that belonged to Linda Archerd, 62, who made it with her then-husband through IVF three decades ago. Back in 1994, Ms Archerd created four embryos — one became her daughter, and the other three were kept frozen in storage for years, as per the report by BBC.

Even after she split from her husband, Ms Archerd didn’t want to destroy or donate the embryos anonymously, because they were biologically linked to her daughter. She spent thousands of dollars each year to keep the embryos stored, hoping to find a good family one day.

She finally chose to use a Christian embryo adoption agency called Nightlight Christian Adoptions, through their “Snowflakes” program. This program lets donors pick the family and even set preferences like religion, race, and nationality — Ms Archerd wanted a married, Caucasian, Christian couple from the U.S, as stated by the report by BBC.

How the Ohio couple got chosen

That’s how she matched with the Pierces, who were looking to adopt an embryo and just wanted to have a child. The IVF procedure was done at Rejoice Fertility in Tennessee, which said they try to transfer any embryo, no matter how old.

Ms Pierce said they weren’t trying to break any records, they only wanted a baby and were lucky to be chosen. Doctors say this is the longest an embryo has ever been frozen before leading to a live birth — the last record was in 2022 with twins from embryos frozen in 1992.
