Minor found dead in a car in Texas elementary school. Here's what happened

In the parking lot of Dr Americo Paredes Elementary School in the Rio Grande Valley community of Mission in Texas, a 5-year-old died in a parked car. The boy was left in the car while temperatures soared to triple-digit numbers.

According to reports, authorities found the boy unresponsive. While the first responders on the scene performed CPR, they failed to save the child’s life.

What did the Sheriff’s office say?


The Sheriff’s office took to social media and posted a Facebook update about the incident. It said that the deputies of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office contacted the La Joya ISD Police Department. The department informed the deputies that a 5-year-old boy was discovered unconscious in a parked car. The EMS arrived at the scene and declared the child dead. The boy was also not breathing.

The sheriff’s office also posted that the matter is being actively investigated.

The La Joya ISD offered to provide counselling to the staff and students of the elementary school where the incident happened.

Rising incidents of children dying due to heat
The latest incident is not an isolated one. According to Kids and Car Safety reports, the recently deceased child is the 19th on the list of children dying in cars.



This year, the US has reported multiple incidents of kids dying due to rising heat levels. So far, there have been four identical cases in Texas alone.

Since 1991, Texas has reported 150 child deaths in cars, ranking first in the category.

Since 1990, more than a thousand children have died in the US in cases of being left in cars. Statistics released by Kids and Car Safety also mention the following data:

Around 7,300 children survived being left in cars in hot weather. However, such children sustain severe injuries.

87% of children dying in cars were aged three years or below.
56% of the children were left in cars by responsible parents or caregivers.

Meanwhile, the founder of Kids and Car Safety remarked that they were pushing for occupant detection technology in cars to prevent such deaths. He mentioned that as they lobby for this technology, many children are dying, which was heartbreaking.
