Despite record numbers of passengers and widespread flight cancellations, overall satisfaction increases
Passenger satisfaction with airports across North America has shown a notable improvement in 2025 despite record travel volumes, delays, and congestion, according to the 2025 North America Airport Satisfaction Study released by JD Power. The study revealed an overall increase of 10 points on a 1,000-point scale compared to the previous year, reflecting better passenger experiences driven primarily by terminal upgrades, enhanced food and retail options, and eased navigation through airports.

The study, based on over 30,000 completed surveys from US and Canadian travelers between July 2024 and July 2025, segments airports into three categories: mega airports with 33 million or more annual passengers, large airports with 10 to 32.9 million, and medium airports with 4.5 to 9.9 million passengers annually.

Satisfaction was measured across seven factors: ease of travel, trust in the airport, terminal facilities, airport staff, departure experience, food/beverage/retail, and arrival experience.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) maintained its position as the highest-ranking mega airport for the second consecutive year, scoring 660 points. Close behind were Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (649) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (634). Miami International Airport showcased the biggest improvement among mega airports, jumping 24 points from 10th to 8th place, while successfully coping with a record passenger count of nearly 56 million in 2024, marking its third consecutive year of record-breaking traffic.

In the large airport category, John Wayne Airport in Orange County led once again with a score of 730, followed by Tampa International Airport (709) and Dallas Love Field (705).

Among medium airports, Indianapolis International Airport topped the category, reflecting continued passenger appreciation for facility investments and localized airport experiences.

Michael Taylor, Managing Director of Travel, Hospitality, and Retail at JD Power, attributed the growth in satisfaction to many airports completing significant capital improvements and emphasizing local cultural elements.

The study also highlighted ongoing passenger concerns such as lengthy wait times and flight delays, especially at the busiest airports. However, travelers acknowledged improvements in food, beverage, retail offerings, and the ease of moving through terminals as key contributors to a better travel experience.
