Cyrus, who has an estimated 50 to 70 tattoos, described them as “like snapshots of my life—memories, emotions, and sometimes, just fun ideas I had in the moment.” However, she admitted, “A mistake that I made that I still think about is, like, 80% of my tattoos. I don’t regret them enough to laser them, but some of them… I could do without.” She humorously singled out her pitbull tattoo (“I love my dog, but just having a pitbull in every picture for the rest of my life is kind of intense”) and a tattoo dedicated to her cat as examples.
The singer’s honesty reflects a broader trend of “tattoo regret,” especially among younger generations. Social media has amplified conversations about tattoos, with many sharing anxieties about patchwork designs or ink that doesn’t age well. Ephemeral tattoos, meant to fade, have gained popularity, though results are mixed.
Brooklyn tattoo artist Gabs Miceli notes, “Tattoo regret isn’t new, but social media has made it more visible. It’s important to have self-compassion—tattoos can be markers of where you were at a certain time in life.”
Despite her regrets, Cyrus continues to get new tattoos, saying, “I’m still getting tattoos, but now I think a little more about what I really want to carry with me.” Fans have praised her authenticity, with one writing, “She’s so real about her regrets. Love this.”
