Mickey 17 is based on the book Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The story follows Mickey, a drifter who joins a space colony as an Expendable. His role is to die and be cloned continuously for scientific research. When the 17th version of Mickey survives, it leads to unexpected events on the planet Niflheim.

The movie stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey. Naomi Ackie plays Nasha, Mickey's love interest. Mark Ruffalo portrays the leader of the expedition. The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Toni Collette and Anamaria Vartolomei.
