Michigan Primary Election: Tudor Dixon secures Republican nomination

Donald Trump-backed conservative commentator Tudor Dixon will contest against Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer in November.

Michigan Primary Election is finally here, and the Republicans, for the upcoming gubernatorial election, will have a new face in form of Tudor Dixon.

The former actor and conservative commentator were projected as the nominee for the Michigan primary elections 2022, which will take place on November 8. Dixon will face off incumbent Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer who ran unchallengedly in the Democratic primary.

Tudor Dixon has been financially backed by the powerful DeVos family and emerged as the prime candidate for the post after other Republican candidates were disqualified from the ballot. At the same time, another was arrested on misdemeanor charges related to the last year's Capitol riot. The DeVos family is reportedly linked to super PACs that have spent over 2 million USD supporting her candidacy.

As per some polls, Dixon took a consistent lead in the GOP primary over the past month, and Donald Trump announced his endorsement less than a week before the election. Dixon, like other candidates from the Republican party, had earlier resonated with Trump's false claims of rigging the 2020 elections. After getting an endorsement from Trump, Dixon stated in more ambiguous language that she had concerns about how the election was conducted in her state.

However, Dixon's battle ahead is a hard nut to crack as Whitmer, who is bidding for a second term, is confident of winning as he is backed by a well-funded campaign and robust approval ratings. And despite Biden's unpopularity in Michigan, recent polls suggest that Whitmer is out of trouble. Another survey conducted before the primary election indicated that Whitmer is leading Dixon in a hypothetical matchup.

Besides, U.S. House of Representative Rashida Tlaib has won the Democratic primary, ensuring a third term in Congress in Michigan's recently redrawn 12th district.
