Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer secures 2nd term after defeating Republican Tudor Dixon

Democratic candidate Governor Gretchen Whitmer has defeated Republican candidate Tudor Dixon to get re-elected as the Michigan Governor and head to a second term. Per estimates projected by The Associated Press, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer amassed more than 2.2 million, accounting for 53.3%, while Dixon was trailing behind at under 1.9 million votes, accounting for 45.1%.

NBC News reported that Whitmer gained a national following during the early days of the pandemic which also brewed expectations of her holding a higher federal office in the future.

Political analysts have also suggested that Gretchen Whitmer was a prime target for the Republicans in 2022, and it may continue to be so until the 2024 presidential elections.




Despite her popularity, Whitmer faced a stiff challenge from Tudor Dixon early in the race. However, in the later stages, Whitmer managed to hold her ground thanks to a big budget allocated for advertisement, which was estimated to run in tens of millions of dollars.

Tudor Dixon couldn’t match the high ad spending, which is one of the reasons for her falling short. Gov. Whitmer’s campaign manager, Preston Elliott, issued an official statement following their victory. The statement mentioned that Michiganders had registered their voices to re-elect the governor and the lieutenant governor.

Elliott further stated that they would continue to build on their “historic progressive investing” in the comprehensive state infrastructure.
Whitmer has been an ardent critic of Donald Trump, with the former president calling her “that Michigan woman” during the lockdown period.
