According to Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong, the 31-year-old suspect from Romulus was first seen driving erratically near the church. Witnesses reported the man exited his vehicle wearing a tactical vest and carrying multiple firearms, including a handgun and a long gun. A churchgoer acted swiftly by ramming the suspect’s vehicle with a truck, buying critical time for security personnel to prepare.
The gunman fired at the truck before approaching the church entrance. A security guard inside confronted the suspect, sustaining a leg injury but managing to return fire and fatally wound the attacker. Police confirm the guard’s actions were instrumental in stopping the attack and saving lives.
Inside the church, panic ensued as worshippers scrambled for cover. Videos shared on social media captured the chaotic scene, with congregants ducking behind pews and rushing to safety. The church’s pastor praised the bravery of both the security guard and the parishioner who intervened, emphasizing that their quick response prevented a far worse outcome.
Law enforcement responded promptly, with local police, the FBI, and Homeland Security launching a joint investigation. Authorities believe the suspect acted alone and may have been experiencing a mental health crisis, though no official motive has been released.
