Michael Kenneth Williams drug-related death: 72-year-old man charged in connection with case

Carlos Macci, 72, has been sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for selling heroin laced with fentanyl, resulting in the overdose death of actor Michael K Williams.

Carlos Macci, a 72-year-old man charged in connection with the drug-related death of actor Michael K Williams, has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison. The prosecution had sought a four-year term, but pleas for leniency from the actor's nephew and the co-creator of the show "The Wire" influenced the final decision.

Macci was one of four individuals accused of selling Williams heroin laced with the dangerous drug fentanyl, which tragically led to the actor's overdose death at the age of 54 in 2021. While the three others face more severe charges directly linked to Williams' demise, Macci pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute narcotics back in April.

Prosecutors highlighted that Macci had been involved in selling deadly narcotics, including heroin laced with fentanyl, for many years. The sentencing judge, Ronnie Abrams, pointed out that Macci's drug dealings not only claimed Williams' life but also resulted in the loss of his own freedom.

However, the court considered a three-page letter submitted by David Simon, co-creator of "The Wire," advocating for mercy towards Macci. Simon stressed that Williams, before his passing, believed in redemption and would have empathized with the defendant's struggles. Williams' nephew, Dominic Dupont, also expressed hope that Macci could turn his life around, adding that it weighed heavily on him to witness someone in such a predicament.
