Michael Keaton traded Hollywood glamour for a 1,000-acre Montana cattle ranch; the actor helped design his home and turned a cabin into a guest retreat

American actor Michael Keaton’s Montana home sits on a 1,000-acre working cattle ranch in McLeod, Montana. The actor helped design and construct the home, which Architectural Digest says was created to feel comfortable and fit its surroundings. The property also includes a relocated cabin that became a guesthouse.

Michael Keaton played an active role in creating the ranch house

Architectural Digest’s 2024 profile says Keaton designed his dream home in McLeod, Montana, and helped construct it. The article also quotes his builder, Terry Baird, who told Architectural Digest in 1997 that, “In all reality, he was the general contractor on the thing."

Architect Candace Tillotson-Miller worked on the house, while interior designers Helen Kent and Julie Iverson worked on the interiors. Keaton wanted the home to be comfortable and fit its surroundings without being overly styled as a Western house.


Keaton also wanted enough room for his relatives, including his six siblings and their families, as well as his year-round staff. Tillotson-Miller described the house as roomy enough for 12 people while still being cozy for one.

A nearby cabin became Michael Keaton’s guesthouse

The ranch includes an old homesteader’s cabin that Keaton moved from a nearby property. He and builder Terry Baird, along with architect Durward Sobek, reassembled it at its current location. A porch, kitchen and bathroom were added, and the cabin is now used as a guesthouse.

Architectural Digest’s 2024 profile says the relocated one-bedroom cabin provided Keaton with a place to stay while the main house was being assembled. The profile also says Keaton initially slept in a tent or his pickup truck while mapping out his plans for the home.

The earlier Architectural Digest feature reported that Keaton lived in the cabin for about five years before constructing the main house.

The home combines rustic details with outdoor living

Architectural Digest’s original feature describes the house as using stone and cedar, reinforcing its rustic character. The dining room and kitchen area includes a fireplace made from Chief Joseph stone selected by Keaton.

The house has a wide porch and a mudroom with closet space for outdoor equipment such as fishing rods and skis. Keaton also wanted to preserve the views around the home.

Inside the relocated cabin, contemporary appliances were combined with an old sink. Keaton and Baird also worked on the cabin’s design, including its dormer roof.

Architectural Digest describes the property as a 1,000-acre working cattle ranch. Its more recent profile identifies the Montana ranch as Keaton’s primary residence.

The property was featured in Architectural Digest’s June 1997 issue, which documented Keaton’s involvement in creating the ranch house and the surrounding working ranch.
