Michael Jackson and his brothers entered Chicago's One-derful studios for their first recording session on July 13, 1967, fifty-six years ago. The session resulted in the song "Big Boy," which marked the first time Jackson's voice was recorded and the first recording from The Jackson 5.

The song will now be available for the first time on digital platforms. Fans can purchase "Big Boy (One-derful Version)" as part of a limited-edition release beginning from December 7.

This release is a collaboration between the song's owner, Recordpool, and anotherblock, a Swedish blockchain-based music and royalty marketplace.

The "open edition" package, available for $25, includes the "Big Boy (One-derful Version)" via anotherblock's player; images of master tape and agreements; downloadable song stems; and a digital vinyl B-side featuring "Michael the Lover" and "My Girl" along with their stems.

The "limited edition" costs $100 and includes everything in the open edition, as well as newly designed artwork and nine additional songs from the Steeltown sessions in 1967:

  • Big Boy (Steeltown Version)
  • We Don't Have to Be Over 21 (To Fall in Love)
  • You've Changed
  • Tracks of My Tears
  • Lonely Heart
  • Saturday Night at the Movies
  • Stormy Monday
  • Under the Boardwalk

Starting December 7, at noon ET, these digital versions will be available worldwide for 48 hours via the anotherblock website.

Journalist Jake Austen discovered the studio master recording for "Big Boy (One-derful Version)" in 2009.

Steeltown Records released a later version of "Big Boy," re-recorded in a separate session, as The Jackson 5's first single in January 1968.

One-derful was a 1960s Chicago label owned by brothers George and Ernie Leaner, located on South Michigan Avenue near Chess Records on the city's Record Row. Eric Leaner, Ernie's son, and the One-derful estate are partners in the release.

A portion of the sale proceeds will be donated to the Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit serving Lake County, Indiana, where Jackson's hometown of Gary is located, in collaboration with Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson.

Katherine Jackson in a statement said that through anotherblock's endeavor, the Jackson family's initial recordings of their musical heritage found a new rhythm for the digital age. It demonstrates that the Jacksons' story, like their music, is timeless.
