Mexico clinched a record-extending 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup title with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the United States at the Houston’s NRG Stadium on Sunday. In a tense and closely contested final, the Americans took an early lead, but Mexico responded with determination.

Edson Alvarez sealed the comeback with a decisive header in the 77th minute, capping off another intense chapter in the fierce North American rivalry.

Chris Richards gave the United States a dream start with a fourth-minute header, putting them ahead early in the Gold Cup final. However, Mexico responded strongly, with Raul Jimenez leveling the score in the 27th minute.

The match remained tightly contested until Alvarez scored the winner, with the goal confirmed after a VAR review.

The US took an early lead in front of nearly 71,000 fans, as Richards headed home Sebastian Berhalter’s curling free-kick in the fourth minute. But that bright start faded quickly as Mexico dominated possession and chances for much of the match.

Jimenez brought El Tri level in the 27th minute, latching onto a clever through ball from Marcel Ruiz and smashing his finish into the roof of the net.

Jimenez honored his late former Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate Diogo Jota in a touching moment after scoring Mexico’s equalizer in the Gold Cup final.

Following his goal, Jimenez celebrated by holding up a shirt bearing Jota’s name and number 20. The gesture paid tribute to the Liverpool and Portugal star, who tragically died in a car crash in Spain last week.

The relentless pressure from Mexico continued through the second half, and their efforts were rewarded in the 77th minute. Johan Vasquez’s flick from a set piece found Alvarez, who powered in the winner with a firm header. Though initially ruled offside, VAR confirmed the goal after a brief check.

"It's a very emotional moment for me," said West Ham midfielder Alvarez after the victory.

"Ever since I got to Houston, I've been thinking about that heartbreak. I just asked life to give me one more joy."

Despite the US showing early promise, Mauricio Pochettino’s inexperienced squad - missing several regular starters - were outclassed by a sharper and more clinical Mexico.

El Tri’s triumph not only reaffirmed their regional dominance but also opened a three-title gap over their arch-rivals, who remain on seven Gold Cups.

"Obviously we're disappointed not to come away with a win," USA captain Tim Ream said after the defeat.

"We started out really well and then they obviously got a spell in the game in the second part of the first half. We just missed a little bit of calmness when we won the ball, to try and move them around a little bit," Ream added.
