Mexican Independence Day in Coachella Valley: Date, celebrations, key details

Mexican Independence Day festivities are generally referred to as "El Grito," after the battle cry given on September 16, 1810, by Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest, and revolutionary whose remarks that day sparked the war that won Mexico independence from Spain.

The city has historically conducted "the El Grito Fiestas Patrias" celebrations, however, these were halted in 2020 because of the COVID-19 epidemic. The festival will return to the Park at Rancho Las Flores on Saturday, from 3 to 10 p.m., after three years. The event is a family affair, with youngsters encouraged to take part in various activities and games. There will be seven musical performers performing, including Los Morros del Norte, Los 2 De La S, and Grupo Karisma. There will be no alcohol allowed at the event, but multiple truck vendors will provide food.

Coachella Crossroads, an outdoor event site adjacent to the Spotlight 29 casino established by the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians, will host its inaugural Mexican Independence Day celebration on Friday. Mariachi Coachella and Banda la Reyna del Valle will perform live beginning at 5:30 p.m. Lupillo Rivera, a Grammy Award-winning singer of traditional Mexican banda will perform at 7:30 p.m.


The evening's entertainment also features a fireworks show at 9 p.m., followed by the celebration's conclusion at 10:30 p.m. Ron's BBQ, Tacos El Primo, 760Teppanyaki, Valley Fusion Sushi, and others will sell food during the event, providing a diverse range of cuisine. Face painting and soccer games are among the activities available for children. Mexican folklore dancing and a performance by Escaramuza Charra Alteza, a dancing horse troop, will also be part of the celebrations.
