With Metro 2039 officially revealed by 4A Games and Deep Silver, the beloved post-apocalyptic shooter franchise is returning to the tunnels beneath Moscow for its fourth mainline chapter. This new entry promises psychological horror, intense storytelling, and a darker human conflict shaped by war, fear, and survival.

Set six years after the original game, the new title takes players back beneath Moscow, returning to the claustrophobic underground tunnels that helped define the series.

Why is Metro returning underground?

Unlike Metro Exodus, which took players beyond Moscow, Metro 2039 shifts the focus back to the underground world that made the franchise famous. The story unfolds in a shattered Metro system where survivors of nuclear war continue to live beneath the city. This time, the underground factions and station communities have been united under a single authoritarian regime known as the Novoreich, led by a new Fuhrer called Hunter.

While the regime promises a better life, the reality inside the tunnels is far darker. The Metro is described as a place filled with propaganda, misinformation, fear, and violence, where the brutal ideology is simple: if it’s hostile, you kill it, as per a report by PlayStation Blog.

Who is the new protagonist?

The game introduces a new voiced lead character known as "The Stranger." He is portrayed as a recluse haunted by violent nightmares and traumatic memories. Forced to return to the underground world he once vowed never to revisit, his journey becomes deeply personal as he confronts the ghosts of his past, as per a report by PlayStation Blog.

The reveal trailer opens inside one of his disturbing nightmares, layering scenes of violence and psychological horror before pulling him back into the real nightmare of post-apocalyptic Moscow.

This setup promises a more emotionally driven story while keeping the series’ signature survival-horror atmosphere intact.

What can players expect from gameplay?

4A Games has teased early gameplay footage and cinematics, offering a first look at what players can expect. Environmental storytelling once again plays a central role. The developers describe their design approach as “frozen stories,” where each level contains visual clues, objects, bodies, and ruined spaces that allow players to piece together what happened, as per a report by PlayStation Blog.

In one sequence, The Stranger narrowly survives a terrifying encounter with a mutant Nosalis before escaping into a crowded station community.

These settlements continue the bleak and atmospheric tone of the series, showing people struggling to live, fight, and survive in a broken world.

How does the new engine improve visuals?

Like previous entries, Metro 2039 has been built on 4A Games’ custom engine. The studio says the game pushes visual boundaries once again, especially after being early adopters of ray tracing in Metro Exodus. For Metro 2039, the technology has reportedly been rebuilt to deliver a more refined and better-performing experience.

Players on PS5 can expect stunning, haunting visuals designed to heighten the horror and immersion of the underground setting.

How does the war influence the story?

One of the most powerful aspects of Metro 2039 is how real-world events have influenced its development. As a Ukrainian studio, 4A Games shared that many team members continued working while sheltering from drone strikes, often relying on batteries and generators. The studio says Russia’s invasion of Ukraine directly shaped the game’s themes. This chapter focuses on the cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom, offering what the developers describe as an authentic Metro story told from a uniquely Ukrainian perspective, as per a report by PlayStation Blog.

With its return to Moscow’s tunnels, a darker political storyline, and deeply human themes, Metro 2039 is already emerging as one of the most anticipated releases in the post-apocalyptic shooter genre.
