Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, keeps secret blacklists of ex-staff who are ruled out for rehiring, even if they had impeccable performance records at the company, a new report revealed.

The workers, who were fired or let go, may be permanently shut out from being able to come back to Meta, usually for reasons that have nothing to do with their work performance, according to Business Insider.

How the blocklist system works

Meta has developed mechanisms to monitor the rehiring eligibility of former employees, according to the report. Some former employees have been marked with labels such as "do not rehire" or labelled as "non-regrettable attrition," as per Business Insider.

These lists do not only include those who broke company rules or performed poorly but can also include employees who just didn't get along with a manager, according to the report. One former Meta manager explained "If a manager didn't like you, it wasn't hard to put someone on a list," as quoted by Business Insider.

As per the report, a manager can put a worker on a blocklist by filling out a form within minutes. Once placed on this list, it’s nearly impossible to get off, according to those familiar with the process, reported Business Insider. Even if a senior leader like a company vice president intervened, it wouldn't guarantee removal, the report added.

Meta justifies its practices

However, Meta's spokesperson claimed that the company maintained an impartial process where managers are required to follow specific criteria when putting someone on a blocklist, as per Business Insider.

The spokesperson said "There are clear criteria for when someone is marked ineligible for rehire that are applied to all departing employees, and there are checks and balances in the process so that a single manager cannot unilaterally tag someone ineligible without support," as quoted in the report.

Meta cracks down on leaks

Apart from the backlash on layoffs and blacklists, Meta has recently moved against leaks of confidential information, having sacked 20 employees for leaking internal details outside the firm, according to the report. AMeta spokesperson noted that the company "will continue to take action when we identify leaks,” as quoted by The Verge.

Tech industry layoffs

While the layoffs by Meta come as many tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Intel have also been cutting down jobs, as per the report. As many as 81 tech firms have laid off employees so far in 2025, impacting over 22,000 employees, as data compiled by Layoffs.fyi.
