Metaverse was touted to be one of the biggest technology revolutions of digital tech history. The hype around it was such high that Mark Zuckerberg changed Facebook Inc.’s name to Meta. The gamble proved to be too big as Metaverse struggles to be a common affair.

Zuckerberg was riding on the theory that (Virtual Reality) VR-based social networking would become a norm post-pandemic, as ubiquitous as Facebook had been during its prime. Sadly for him, things didn’t pan out the way he’d imagined. In fact, Metaverse has been plagued with social evils like racism and sexual assault from users, making it a monster-sized PR problem for Meta.

Earlier this week, Zuckerberg announced the launch of Meta’s VR platform to Spain and France, Horizon Worlds.

But, instead of getting applause, Zuckerberg mostly faced mockery.

Horizon Worlds has been consistently ‘mocked’ for having ugly graphics and being sprinkled with glitches. Since its launch in December last year in the US, the Metaverse game has attracted only 300,000 users.

What’s embarrassing is that netizens keep on comparing Horizon Worlds, albeit unfavorably, to Second Life, the longest-running internet game that reportedly has over 64 million users.

Hence, when Zuckerberg released his selfie taken in the game, netizens continued to ‘mock’ him for such mediocre graphics.

In fact, Christopher Hooks, senior editor at Texas Monthly, tweeted that the selfie looks like a 2002 Nintendo GameClub release, terming the photo as “World Baby.”

Technology expert and TechnoLlama Founder Andres Guadamuz compared Zuckerberg’s selfie with a 2007 photo from Second Life, which looks way better despite the latter being over 15 years old.

One user mocked Meta by saying that the most brilliant technologists are creating 1995-level graphics.

Another user commented on Twitter that Meta was using hardware less powerful than mid-range smartphones. A popular media house remarked that Horizon Worlds' graphics are akin to “low-budget Taiwanese animations” and hence, fail to create any appeal for the general audience.
