Meet Xuanyi Geng, the Chinese speedcuber who solved a 3×3 Rubik's Cube in 3.05 seconds to break the world record in 2025

For most people, solving a Rubik’s Cube can take several minutes, but for Xuanyi Geng, it took just 3.05 seconds. The Chinese speedcuber made history on April 13, 2025, at the Shenyang Spring 2025 competition in Shenyang, China, when he completed a 3×3×3 Rubik’s Cube solve in 3.05 seconds.

The World Cube Association recorded the performance as a world record for the 3×3×3 single, however, Geng’s mark has since been broken, but his solve remains part of the official history of the event.

Xuanyi Geng’s 3.05-Second Rubik’s Cube Solve

Geng’s record came during the second round of the 3×3×3 event at Shenyang Spring 2025.


The WCA records his five solves in that round as 4.24, 4.69, 3.05, 4.57 and 4.46 seconds. His 3.05-second solve was marked as a world record, while his average for the round was 4.42 seconds.

Although Geng produced the fastest single solve, he did not win the overall 3×3×3 competition. Yiheng Wang finished first with a 4.21-second average, while Geng finished second with a 5.09-second average.

The distinction is important because speedcubing competitions record both individual solves and averages. Geng’s 3.05 seconds was his single-solve world record, while his final competition result was based on his average.

Xuanyi Geng’s World Record Was Later Broken

The 3.05-second mark eventually became a previous world record because on February 8, 2026, Polish speedcuber Teodor Zajder solved a 3×3×3 cube in 2.76 seconds at the GLS Big Cubes Gdańsk 2026 event in Gdańsk, Poland.

Guinness World Records lists Zajder’s 2.76-second performance as the fastest time to solve a 3×3×3 rotating puzzle cube. Guinness also states that Zajder surpassed Geng’s previous 3.05-second mark.

So, Geng is a former 3×3×3 single world-record holder, while Zajder currently holds the Guinness record.

Geng Also Finished Second at the 2025 World Championship

Geng continued competing after his record-setting performance in Shenyang.

At the Rubik’s WCA World Championship 2025, he finished second in the 3×3×3 Cube event. His final included a 3.95-second best single and a 4.49-second average. The WCA lists him as the runner-up in the event.

The result came several months after his 3.05-second world-record solve and was another notable entry in his official competition record.

A 3.05-Second Solve That Made History

Geng’s 3.05-second performance at Shenyang Spring 2025 lasted as the 3×3×3 single world record until Zajder lowered the mark to 2.76 seconds in February 2026.

The WCA continues to list Geng’s 3.05-second solve in its world-record history, alongside his other official competition results.

While the record no longer belongs to Geng, the 3.05-second solve remains the performance that briefly made him the fastest official 3×3×3 single solver in the world.
