Democrat candidate Xavier Becerra defeated Republican candidate Steve Hilton and won California's governor's race. Becerra is set to succeed outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom, and will become the next governor of the most populous state of the United States.

Significance of Becerra's victory

Becerra made history and became the first Latino to hold the office in more than 150 years. The Latino to serve as California governor was Romualdo Pacheco in 1875. Pacheco did not win a direct gubernatorial election. He assumed office after his predecessor left the position. This victory is a big thing for Latino political representation in California. Being the son of Mexican immigrants, he has spoken about his family's working-class background very often.
