A problem on the ski slopes sparked an idea
When William LeFaivre was in third grade and learning to ski, he experienced a challenge familiar to several beginners: keeping his skis parallel.When the skis crossed, William faced swerves, tumbles, and crashes. Instead of simply dealing with the concern, he began thinking about how skiers could more easily tell whether their mechanics were correct and their skis were properly aligned.
That idea became the foundation for Ski Sense.
William worked through testing, modifications, and prototypes to develop a system capable of giving skiers immediate information about their approach. Ski Sense includes a network of sensors attached to skis and uses Bluetooth technology to provide real-time guidance.
How Ski Sense provides feedback
The system was made to communicate alignment information via lights and vibration.A vibrator is attached to the skier’s helmet, while lights are positioned at the front of the skis. The lights use various colors to indicate the skier’s alignment.
Green means the skis are perfectly parallel. Orange indicates that some adjustment is required, while red signals that the alignment is seriously off-track.
This arrangement offers skiers immediate feedback regarding their mechanics. Rather than having to find their alignment only through observation, they obtain signals indicating when their form requires to be corrected.

William changed his design as challenges appeared
Creating Ski Sense was not a straightforward procedure. William faced technical difficulties that required him to rethink parts of his original design.His first plan was to depend on a single sensor. During the development process, he discovered that the technique would not work unless the sensor was positioned precisely. He responded by changing the design and creating a network of sensors that could work together to find the alignment of the skis.
Snow presented another concern during the prototyping stage. Snow build-up affected his earlier prototypes, requiring another change in the technology.
William eventually replaced the laser and infrared sensors he had been using with proximity sensors. The changes enabled him to continue developing the invention despite the challenges he encountered along the way.
Ski Sense became a patented invention
William’s continued work on the system finally resulted in a U.S. patent. Ski Sense was issued U.S. Patent 11,724,168 B1 on August 15, 2023.The patent process was supported pro bono by the law firm WilmerHale.
The achievement followed a development process in which William repeatedly tested his ideas, identified problems, modified his designs, and built new prototypes. His experience demonstrates how an invention can evolve as its creator responds to challenges faced during development.
His next invention focuses on helping children
