Dana White, the president of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is now considered one of the most successful people in the sports industry. It has been 20 years since he started this MMA fighting club in Las Vegas. The initial years were full of challenges and failures, but White made excellent strategies and took the company to a whopping revenue growth level of $4 billion.

What was White’s early life?

White was born in 1969 to a college-dropout mother and an alcoholic father. His childhood was not the one would imagine. In one of his interviews, he said his acquaintances during teenage years were gangsters, drug sellers and so on. Once he completed high school, he did several jobs, from a street paver to a bouncer. A couple of years later, he got his first breakthrough as a boxing coach at a famous Boston-based club.

White met real fighters during his job as a coach, but soon realized his main area of forte was as a jock. But unfortunately, he couldn’t find clarity in the job. When things didn’t end well for White, he and his mother moved to Nevada, where he continued to train boxers in several sports and health clubs. His sessions became so popular that people considered him a celebrity. In 2000, he managed two professionals trained in different forms of martial arts, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

George Hickman (in pic), MMA coach at Tiger Muay Thai said, "The fighters we have coming through help to breed success. Seeing them train inspires everyone. You can watch someone like Petr work on his clinch game with the Muay Thai fighters, then you can see that play out in his fights. He's a sponge, and that's what the great fighters are. They're always looking for an edge and everyone learns from that."

Thailand has a chequered history when it comes to MMA, the government banning the sport as "brutal and not boxing" in 2012 before slowly allowing promotions such as One Championship to stage events. Former wrester Hickman turned to coaching and helped to popularise MMA after arriving in Phuket in 2014. "There hadn't been any education on it. But that has changed. There are MMA events in Thailand and now Loma has been signed (to UFC) that's helped Thailand become a hotbed for MMA training," Hickman said.

What changes does he make to propel UFC to reach new milestones?

Due to his sheer belief in the wonders and power of martial arts, he was able to take the UFC to the next level. He believed the UFC didn’t stand a chance against some of the top sports clubs in the country, and that’s why he introduced MMA fighting arenas under the umbrella of the UFC. His innovative strategies and efforts to incorporate the MMA combat style earned UFC $1 billion in revenue in just 12 months.

During his presidency, the UFC signed a seven-year contract with ESPN, which resulted in a $1.5 billion profit. In March, UFC achieved another milestone when it acquired the O2 area in London for $4.3 million. According to White’s plan to make the MMA combat style legal and acceptable in several countries, the first target of the UFC was France. On Saturday, White hosted his first programme to establish the art of MMA in Paris, France.

One of the most significant milestones White achieved was the strengthening of the relationship between the UFC and the UAE when he allowed 400 individuals to get involved in MMA and adopt the fighting styles of the UAE.
